OPERATION NAMESAKE

Preserving the Stories Behind the Names
Project Leader: Tim Yauck, 2nd District Historian
Mission Statement
Operation Namesake is a historical preservation and educational initiative within the Wisconsin American Legion, developed by 2nd District Historian Tim Yauck.
The mission of Operation Namesake is to research, document, preserve, and share the stories of the individuals for whom American Legion Posts are named, ensuring that their military service, personal sacrifices, and contributions to our nation are remembered by present and future generations.
Purpose of Operation Namesake
Every American Legion Post has a history, and many carry the names of veterans who demonstrated extraordinary service, courage, and sacrifice. Unfortunately, as generations pass, the personal stories behind these names can become forgotten or lost.
Operation Namesake seeks to change that by bringing these individuals' stories to life through historical research, written narratives, photographs, audio recordings, videos, and multimedia presentations.
Under Tim Yauck's leadership, the initiative is developing a model that American Legion Posts throughout Wisconsin can use to research and present their own namesake histories.
Goals and Objectives
Operation Namesake encourages American Legion Posts to:
- Research Their Namesakes: Discover the military service, personal background, and historical significance of the individuals honored in their Post names.
- Preserve Historical Records: Collect photographs, military records, newspaper articles, family histories, and other historical materials.
- Share Their Stories: Develop educational presentations, videos, written histories, and other multimedia resources.
- Engage Families and Communities: Involve veterans' families, local historians, schools, museums, and community organizations in preserving these legacies.
- Educate Future Generations: Help younger generations understand the sacrifices made by the men and women who served our nation.
- Strengthen American Legion Traditions: Promote pride, patriotism, remembrance, and a deeper understanding of each Post's identity and heritage.
A Statewide Opportunity
Operation Namesake is designed to provide Wisconsin American Legion Posts with the inspiration, tools, and guidance needed to tell their own stories.
Through this effort, Posts can strengthen their connections with their communities while creating lasting historical resources that honor the individuals whose names they proudly carry.
The initiative also reinforces the important responsibilities of American Legion historians in preserving both the history of their Posts and the legacy of military service.
Our Commitment
Operation Namesake is more than a historical research project. It is a commitment to remembrance, education, and respect for those who served.
By preserving the stories behind our Post names, we ensure that these veterans are remembered not simply as names on buildings, monuments, or flags, but as individuals whose lives and sacrifices helped shape our communities and our nation.
Operation Namesake — Every Name Has a Story. Every Story Deserves to Be Remembered.
Honoring the Past. Preserving the Legacy. Inspiring the Future.
